One thing I have seen when establishing empowering lifestyle changing habits, there is often a period of time when starting new habits that we need a warming up period to the idea. In fact, by offering the compassion and patience to grow into the Vision, even for a few days or even weeks if need be, it provides the space and openness needed to freely choose without pressure and self-judgment to initiate action and true change.
A habit is the formation of a particular kind of memory that forms in the brain. With repeated action the brain is re-wired to create a new memory (belief) resulting in a new outcome. The “old” habit that is wired will in time be over-ridden with the new habit. Awareness is key to the process when an old habit arises. Simply acknowledge it as such and redirect your attention. Be kind to yourself. It is natural for an old habit to replay at first while the brain is being re-wired.
I have seen this time and time again with clients.
They want to enact change in their life and yet they are unkind to themselves holding such high expectations that they do not allow their authentic truth on a daily basis to come alive and guide them.
Now I am not saying we give ourselves a 'cop out' - listen I did this for years - but what I am saying is to take a new more empowering stance for ourselves understanding the process of change.
They want to enact change in their life and yet they are unkind to themselves holding such high expectations that they do not allow their authentic truth on a daily basis to come alive and guide them.
It is through my own experiences of enacting change that I've learned what can happen and I think it comes down to three possibilities.
Set up unreal expectations - change overnight, never "slip", and ultimately it WILL be a short-lived change.
Give up before you start - I must admit to this one at times. I was told by a Coach of mine, Max Simon, that I needed to embrace my transformational value for others and to be a "steel wall" for conscious choice.
I took that to heart knowing we can only give and do for another what we give and do for ourselves first. It's not possible for me to truly hold a "steel wall" of conscious choice for others if I am not doing that for myself...or at least be able to self-correct along the way. So, I asked myself, "where in my life am I letting myself 'off the hook' and not following through when fears come up. Wahlaa...a powerful inquiry that provided me the ability to make a tremendous shift in an area of my life I'd not taken 100% responsibility.
Warm yourself up - Recognize that life changes that are long standing take some acclimation to the change.
Instead of setting up unrealistic 'all-or-nothing' expectation which consequently often result in panic or getting down on yourself, being loving and kind knowing it's new and new habits don't just start overnight as a new lifestyle - it takes time. And actually the more we experience the 'off and on' in the initial stages the more likely it will be a life changing habit....if we are willing to be an observer of our experience and check in authentically to see what truly is working and what needs some shifting.
Think of the philosophy of dieting for instance - it's an all-or-nothing, 100% compliance, and this is ultimately not sustainable for an entire life-time and is not going to work because we don't really want or desire a permanent change.
In supporting clients to redefine and create their authentic life, we use a life mapping process that provides a guide to work from versus the mindset of "should" or internal pressure to comply or follow through.
It gives you a feeling of deeper peace coming forth as you get to settle into your authentic life flow, to practice surrendering and releasing of urgency and opening the door for being present in the moment knowing that you will be able to make conscious choices with the important aspects of your life.
With life mapping, creating one's authentic daily life flow, you map out the key aspects of your ideal life and are used as a guide to being empowered. Ultimately this paves the path to identify and implement authentic powerful habits that are life transforming with ease.
